The Canadian Oil Boom

This is and interesting story that was mentioned in an editorial in the Bemidji Pioneer. Although the pipeline has been a great thing for Bemidji's business I have to ask if it is worth the environmental cost. Do you think everyone that was responsible for allowing the pipeline to come through our area was aware of the environmental consequences?

Last meeting

Another lively discussion was had at the last meeting.

Here is a great article about gas and oil that was sent to me by Gina. http://www.truthout.org/10220910. Thanks Gina for another great side-subject.

We also have a rough schedule the upcoming not month...but year! Thanks for everyone's suggestions. We will have a great schedule coming up and if you haven't made it to Michael Moore's new expose' on Wall Street then stay posted because as soon as it comes out on video we are going to have a public showing. Hopefully the movie companies won't get too upset, you know copyrights and all.

We will now be meeting regularly on
the SECOND Thursday of every month at 6:30pm in the Minnesota Energy mtg room

Our next meeting will be: Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Our reading selection (suggested by Vince) will be: The Places In Between by
Rory Stewart, 2009.

In 2002 Stewart traveled the entire county of Afghanistan by foot (a 6000 mile
trek including some time in Pakistan, India, and Nepal). He is the director of
the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University, a former British
soldier, and foreign service officer. Stewart believes in order to talk about
a country you need to spend time in their villages. He does not agree with the
proposed US goals of increasing troops in Afghanistan. To read his most recent
interview see the September 25, 2009 Bill Moyers Journal on PBS.org.

Thanks again Gina for letting me plagiarize your email.

Update on Next Meeting

Sorry I kind of fell off the face of the earth. I was in the Boundary Waters and things got changed just as I was leaving. So sorry, but I needed a solid week away from my normal routine. So the next meeting will be Thursday October 15th at 6:30 pm. Please come with some ideas for the upcoming year. The meeting will be located at the Minnesota Energy Building.
